about the artist
Daniel grew up in the Midwest and began creating art at an early age fostered by a painterly mother and a pastoral father. With continued education and exploration Daniel has worked to develop a style that reflects the contemplative nature of the natural landscape.
Daniel studied at the University of South Dakota. He has learned much from the many artists and mentors he has encountered and gleaned information from. He currently resides in Fresno, CA with his wife working as a graphic designer and artist.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint the landscape, both wild and civilized.
The inherent rhythm of the rows of agriculture is juxtaposed by the flowing curves of the river. The river gives shape and life to the man-made geometry of the fields. It is both an adversary to the fields and a life-giving force. This interaction and constant state of fluctuation create an interesting tension that resembles a dance. The ebb and flow of nature create landscapes smoothed, carved, and hewn into shape by the seemingly invisible forces of time. Little pricks of pressure undaunted by resistance.
I have been capturing agricultural landscapes in paintings for decades. With this series, I am seeking a new perspective on the fields of the valley. This aerial perspective gives a wider field of view than what I have previously explored. From this vantage point, the interaction of the fields and river takes on new shapes and new meaning.
I love being in the air during the fleeting moments of the golden hour. A sacred time when light bounces off grass and trees, silhouetting the sky and casting shadows across the landscape. Long shadows of light and dark; calling for long draws of thought. There are few experiences more refreshing to my soul than pursuing and discovering an amazing sunrise, quickly and constantly changing.
I love the transition that takes place when I enter into nature. These images that have been blurred in the passing traffic suddenly become still and reveal their many layers of nuance. “Just a little further,” is a mantra I often find myself whispering as I seek that moment of inspiration, that perfect combination of trees, hills, fields, rocks, waves, light and shadow. Always going a little further, motivated by anticipation. And when I find it there is nothing better than to take it in and be in the moment.
